What is a Netsuke?
A netsuke is a small carved ornament, traditionally made of ivory, wood, or other materials, that originated in Japan around the 17th century. They were originally simply-carved button fastener on the cords of an inrō, a small case that hung suspended from one's obi on traditional Japanese garments such as kimono. The netsuke prevented the inrō from slipping off the sash.

 

Netsuke eventually came be appreciated not only for their practical use but also as miniature works of art, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic traditions of Japan. Netsuke come in various shapes and designs, often depicting animals, mythical creatures, plants, and everyday objects.
