Honor the legacy of one of Japan’s most legendary samurai with the Dokuganryu Masamune Sosaku Kokeshi Doll, handcrafted by esteemed artisan Sato Soichi. Inspired by Date Masamune (伊達 政宗)—the formidable daimyō of the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods—this exquisite wooden doll embodies the power, strategy, and fearless determination of the man known as the One-Eyed Dragon of Ōshū (独眼竜).

Masamune, heir to a powerful line of feudal lords in the Tōhoku region, was a brilliant tactician who overcame adversity, including the loss of his right eye, to rise as a respected leader and later found the city of Sendai.

Carved from premium mizuki (dogwood) wood and adorned with bold hand-painted details, this unique sosaku kokeshi features Masamune’s signature crescent moon helmet and a striking expression that reflects his fierce determination.

Whether displayed as a symbol of resilience or gifted to a history aficionado, the Dokuganryu Masamune Kokeshi Doll is a timeless tribute to one of Japan’s most legendary warlords. Secure yours today and bring the spirit of the one-eyed dragon into your collection.

What is a Kokeshi doll?

Kokeshi dolls, originating from the northeastern region of Japan, have been cherished for over 150 years as children's toys. Handmade from wood that has typicaly been dried for 6 -12 months, these dolls feature a simple trunk and head with delicate painted lines to highlight the face. Typically adorned with floral and ring designs in various colours, these dolls are then coated with a layer of wax.

Traditional styles of kokeshi dolls are characterized by their long and narrow shape, an absence of arms or legs, and color patterns that have been passed down and preserved. Sosaku (creative) kokeshi, on the other hand, are another style created with free and creative ideas, without being bound to traditional or regional styles. Since the 1950s, makers have signed their kokeshi dolls, often on the bottom and sometimes on the back.
