What is a Netsuke? 
A netsuke is a small carved ornament, traditionally made of ivory, wood, or other materials, that originated in Japan around the 17th century. They were originally simply-carved button fasteners on the cords of inrō, small cases that hung suspended from one's obi on traditional Japanese garments such as kimono. The netsuke prevented the inrō from slipping off the sash.
